Look for These Features in 4/0 Welding Cable

29th Nov 2020

You’ve probably heard about how you need to have flexible, tough, welding cable, but how can you be sure that’s what you’re getting when you don’t know how to pick apart the features? Well, take a page from our blog here and check out some of the features that come with our 4/0 Welding Cable, which, by the way, is useful for a lot more than just welding!

Extra flexibility - Extra flexibility is very important. It's one of the first things that you should look to in welding cable, whether 4/0 welding cable or otherwise. Still, though, when you get towards thicker cables like 4/0, flexibility becomes more important than ever.

Since welding needs to be done in situ, that means the cables need to be able to access your equipment where whatever you’re welding happens to be. You can’t work around that with stiff welding cables, so to keep things simple, more flexible is better. For example, our 4/0 welding cables are made with approximately 2014 strands of pure copper, and they’re only .72 inches wide - that’s some flexibility!

100% copper conductors - It shouldn’t need to be said, but since copper has one of the best conductivity ratings of all materials commonly used as conductors, it’s important to look for this if you can find it. Luckily for you, our welding cables are pure copper. Most welding cables are, but since some other metals are occasionally added to copper cables to improve their strength, it’s important to note that you should look for pure copper here.

Useful for a variety of other settings - Our welding cables are not just useful for welding, although that is their primary application. You can also use them for motors, generators and as battery cable, as well as for other purposes. As they can be used with inverters, that even makes them practical as photovoltaic or PV cable, which is something to keep in mind. With high quality comes a lot of utility, which is just what you get with our welding cables.

Tough insulation - Our 4/0 welding cable is made with Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer Rubber, better known as EPDM. It’s a mouthful, but it’s worth it, because it makes our welding cables amazingly tough, which is something they need.

Consider what we said above - welding needs to be done in a specific location, and that means you can’t always move materials around. You need to bring the welding equipment to them. That means your welding cable could come into contact with a wide range of environmental stressors.

Not only is EPDM mechanically very tough and an excellent electrical insulator, it is also naturally resistant to hydrocarbons (see below as to why this is important) as well as to the extremes of weather, moisture and ozone. EPDM is even resistant to UV light, making it useful for outdoor applications like welding and solar power hook ups.

Oil and gasoline resistance - In the last section where we mentioned that EPDM was resistant to hydrocarbons, we glossed over a very important note that deserves its own call out. Hydrocarbons include, among other things, gasoline and oil, which are common workplace hazards and something across which welding cable is liable to come from time to time.

Even worse, many hydrocarbons dissolve plastics, especially plastics that are petrochemicals. EPDM, however, is highly resistant to their effects, making our welding cable much sturdier, safer, and longer lasting.

Wide temperature tolerances - Since welding often takes place outdoors, it’s important to use a welding cable that is able to withstand a wide range of temperatures. We’ve already mentioned that our welding cable is weather resistant, but it is also specifically operable over a wide range of temperatures, from negative 50 Celsius degrees to 105 Celsius. Consider how cold it can be outside in the winter and how hot it might be in the summer; your welding cable needs to tolerate the entire range. That, coupled with the rest of it’s remarkably resistant factors, is something that makes it even tougher.

Bonus - Made in America! - One more thing to note is the fact that our welding cables, not just our 4/0 welding cables, are proudly made in America. We stand by our products and guarantee them to be as specified, to the letter of listing.
