22nd Oct 2015

THWN stands for Thermoplastic Heat and Water-resistant Nylon-coated. THHN stands for "Thermoplastic High Heat-resistant Nylon-coated".

THWN-THHN-2 wire is one of the most common single conductor wires used in the United States. Most wires in this category carry a dual rating and are marked and approved for both applications. They are rated for voltages up to 600 volts, and are approved for use in wet or dry locations up to 90°C (75°C when exposed to oil).

THWN-THHN-2 wire comes in standard AWG (American Wire Gauge) sizes from 14 AWG to 4/0AWG and larger sizes 250 MCM (thousands of circular mils) to 1000 MCM. Sizes 14, 12 and 10 AWG can be either solid or stranded conductors. Sizes 8 AWG and larger are stranded. THWN-THHN-2 wire comes in a variety of 10 standard colors.

Type THHN/THWN-2 building wire is intended for general-purpose applications as defined by the National Electrical Code (NEC). Type THHN/THWN-2 is permitted for new construction or rewiring for 600-volt applications. THHN wire is normally installed in conduit, and is used in residential and commercial applications.
