XHHW-2 stands for Cross-Linked High Heat Water Resistant Insulated Wire

XHHW-2 wire is one of the most common single conductor wires used in the United States. They are rated for voltages up to 600 volts, and are approved for use in wet or dry locations up to 90°C.

XHHW-2 wire comes in standard AWG (American Wire Gauge) sizes from 14 AWG to 4/0 AWG and larger sizes 250MCM (Thousands of circular mils) to 1000 MCM. Sizes 14, 12 and 10 AWG can be either solid or stranded conductors. Sizes 8 AWG and larger are stranded. Sizes 8 AWG and larger can be either copper or aluminum. XHHW-2 wire comes in a variety of at least 10 standard colors. Some colors may be subject to minimum order requirements.

Type XHHW-2 building wire is intended for general-purpose applications as defined by the National Electrical Code (NEC). Type XHHW2 is permitted for new construction or rewiring for 600-volt applications. XHHW-2 wire is normally installed in conduit, and is used in residential and commercial applications.
